Kubu Taru is a private residence designed for a family of four. The client being wood collectors they seek to build a wooden house from their own personal collection of reclaimed ironwood and teakwood. Situated overlooking the rice terraces and a vast jungle, the house floats above water on metal stilts. The origami metal roof was designed with functionality in mind, a response to the context of sunlight and wind direction – where the angle of the roof allows for morning and evening sunlight to peek through the bedrooms while blocking the hot midday sunlight against the house. The interior was designed with strong references of the Traditional Japanese Ryokan as the client values zen and minimalist design. Inside the house each spaces encircles a courtyard that consist of big boulders of river rocks and a zen garden, creating astonishing views from both sides of rooms.

Kubu Taru is a private residence inspired by the traditional Japanese ryokan house, with the main intention in creating a zen environment. Here the house is positioned overlooking the rice paddies and sunken two meters below the road, for privacy and to reduce traffic noise.
The house floats above water and land on metal stilts with a courtyard in the middle. The roof was designed with functionality in mind, a response to the context of sunlight and wind direction. The space between the ceiling and the roof creates a cross-ventilation system to cool the house. While the angle of the roof allows for morning and evening sunlight to peek through the bedrooms and yet block the hot midday sunlight against the house.
As the clients of the Kubu Taru residence are wood collectors, an extensive part of the house is built on a combination of solid iron and teak wood from their own personal collection. Twenty-one solid teak wood columns independently support the roof, while the house floats underneath the roof on twenty metal stilts.
